Mr. C. S. Tan, MSc., MBA, and Mrs. Tan, MBA are the co-founders of Tan Hearing Centre Sdn. Bhd.

Tan Hearing Centre was founded by Mr. C.S. Tan, an Audiological Scientist who specialises in Adult and Paediatric Audiology. After having obtained his M.Sc in Clinical Audiology (Graduate from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manchester, United Kingdom), Mr. C.S.Tan served in various government institutions, in countries like Brunei Darussalam, Saudi Arabia and closer to home, Malaysia.

In 2001, after more than 20 years of job experience in his field, Mr. C.S.Tan returned to his hometown in Malacca, Malaysia, to fill the void in his country that required his speciality. There were only a few qualified senior audiologists in the country at the time, and an even smaller number of audiologists who specialised in paediatric hearing loss.

About Hearing Loss.

Hearing loss or hearing impairment is the partial or complete loss of the ability to hear and perceive sounds

How is hearing loss measured?

Hearing loss is measured on the dB (Decibels) scale, ranging from 0 to 120dB, across a range of different frequencies (low, mid and high frequencies). An audiogram is a chart used to show the degree of hearing loss across various frequencies. An example of an audiogram is shown below. The selection and fitting of the hearing aid requires extensive experience especially for paedetric cases.

  • Selection

Hearing aids are selected based on the audiogram and to suit the specific needs of the hearing impaired. Currently, we stock various brands of digital hearing aids (Siemens, Phonak, and Oticon) that are programmable.

  • Fitting

Different types of hearing aids are chosen to suit the user's needs. These include the following styles of hearing aids: Completely in the Canal (CIC), In the Canal (ITC), In the Ear (ITE), Receiver in Canal (RIC), Behind the Ear (BTE), Pocket Aids and Bone-conduction Aids.

The appropriate hearing aid is chosen for the user after considering the patient's medical condition, anatomical structure of the ear, fine motor movements (dexterity), social life, and budget.

Paediatric selection and fitting requires experience, skill and willingness to listen to post-fitting feedback from the parents, and to fine-tune accordingly.

  • Continuous Rehabilitation

We emphasize on pre-fitting counselling for first time users.

Our services continue past the hearing aid fitting stage. We encourage our customers (especially first time hearing aid users) to come back to us periodically for fine-tuning of their hearing aids if required, and for further post-fitting counselling.

Where adult users are able to provide us with a verbal feedback, paediatric users are habilitated under a different management including auditory training, aided threshold assessment, hearing aid evaluation, follow-up/feedback sessions, and speech therapy.

  • Hearing Aid Accessories

A wide range of hearing aid accessories are also available upon request, including Frequency Modulated (FM) systems and Bluetooth compatible wireless remote control for the hearing aid, which can improve the perception of speech in unfavourable situations.
